RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

ICL Management is very much conscious of the fact that in the present competitive market it is very important to have good quality of its product at optimum cost.

Therefore ICL Research & Development cell is engaged in the Research and Development activities in the field of cable technology.

Research and Development laboratory is well equipped with most modern and sophisticated Test equipments and few of them are named below:-

i)                    EHV Test field comprising the following:-

       -                      Partial discharge free high voltage transformer of 125 KV supplied by ASEA Sweden.

       -                      Partial discharge detector- supplied by FC Robinson UK

       -                      LT and HT filter supplied by Micafil Switzerland.

       -                      RF shielding room supplied by Ray Proof USA.

       -                      Water end Termination supplied by Tettex Switzerland.

The whole system is capable of measuring partial discharges in the cable at high voltage with a sensitivity of 2PC.

ii)                  Digital Impulse Analysing System supplied by Heafely, Switzerland for analysing the impulse voltage characteristics while conducting the impulse test on the cable by 600 KV Impulse Generator supplied by Foster, UK.

iii)                Tandalta and Capacity Measurement Bridge supplied by Tettex, Switzerland for measuring the power loss angle in the cable and materials upto 10-5

iv)                Tera ohmmeter supplied by Guildeline, Canada for measurement of very high insulation resistance value.

v)                  Clark’s oil test cell for evaluating the electrical characteristics of impregnating oil and other insulating liquids.

vi)                Monsanto Rheometer supplied by Monsanto USA for analysing Rheomtric characteristic  /

            cross-linking properties of XLPE and Rubber Compounds.

vii)              Infra Red spectrometer supplied by Perkin Elmer, USA for polymer identification in Rubber Cable insulation and sheathing materials.

viii)            Ultra Violet radiation test apparatus as per ASTM-G – 53 standard for examining the effect of UV radiation on cables and cable materials.

ix)                NBS Smoke Chamber supplied by Stanton Redcroft UK – To evaluate smoke generation of the fire retardant cable materials.

x)                  UITP –3M Cube smoke chamber for conducting smoke test on finished cables.

xi)                Fully equipped to carry out electrical, Physical, Thermal and fire tests on cable and materials as per National and International standards.

Research and Development lab is manned by well-qualified and experienced technologists and Engineers who are engaged in the R&D work in the area of cable technology.

To be specific, following are the areas of R&D activities.

-                      Developments in cable materials.

-                      Developments in cable design.

-                      Improvements in manufacturing & Testing Techniques and Technology.

-                      Energy Conservation etc.

The senior executives identify the R&D projects and the progress is reviewed periodically.
